Coaching / Mental Performance
Questions of how to
maximize mental performance is of great importance to everyone.
The more we have trained our mind to be strong and
flexible, the easier it is to understand what happens around
us and to make good decisions throughout our business day. Over the
long run, this leads to a sense of control over our destiny and a
much more productive, rewarding and better life than would otherwise be available.
We all use workplace equipment and tools, and all of these tools need to be
're-energized' in some way over time. They may need a
simple service and tune up or a major overhaul. Some times
they just need new batteries to power-up the motor.
We all
take these maintenance tasks seriously because we understand
that when the batteries are fully charged we get the full
energy-drive and potential out of electrical devices. Also,
when the machinery has been well-maintained it lasts longer and
works more economically. Given that, doesn’t it make sense then
to perform some regularly scheduled tune-up/maintenance on our
brain - the control-switch-box/tool that is responsible for the
use of our bodies and inturn our performance levels.
Everyone has experienced days when they seem to be functioning
better than usual; their minds are sharp, they can think quickly,
and on these days concentration, problem solving, and focus seem
easy. Unfortunately, everyone has also experienced days when the
opposite is true -it's difficult to think, distractions are
everywhere, and even the slightest mental task is a challenge.
Consider
also this. We all build routines and develop habits, and we all
periodically get into ruts and get stressed, and in
doing so we cannot see how we can best use our brain. So,
what can be done to increase the number of days when we are sharp
and in control and how can we ditch those bad thinking
habits. What are some of the techniques available to enhance
our mental performance?
Performance
Coaching
There have been many
proposed solutions to this question, some with pseudo-scientific
support, others with fabulous anecdotal or testimonial support,
and some, frankly, with no support at all. There are a vast
number of techniques promoted to help enhance cognitive
performance. A search through the local bookstore or the Internet
will turn up hundreds, if not thousands of examples. These include
the use of; "smart drugs", "positive imagery", "meditation",
"music-therapy", "bio-feedback" etc. Also
a considerable amount of research is being done in the field
of sports psychology to evaluate the effects of different types of
mental practice and conditioning on athletic performance, and many
of the results from this field can be extrapolated to other types
of performance. The conclusion of many research papers suggests that some of these techniques may be beneficial, at
varying degrees, for some people, for some types of performance,
but not for others.
Increasing mental
performance is of great interest to everyone.
Recent research
now suggests that the brain retains its ability to change and
adapt, throughout life. This is new! This implies that efforts to
optimize mental function and achieve peak performance can be
valuable to all people. The bottom-line is that only
with these recent advancements in behavioral neuroscience on
brain function and mental performance have we only just began
to find the real answers to many of the above questions.
